  • Can I install Concrete backer board over old deteriorated concrete?

The concrete in the laundry room is old (over 55yrs) and has been crumbling and dusting. The concrete is in OK shape, does not have water problem, is very dry, but is poor in strength. The concrete in another area was really hard!. We are in a freeze/thaw zone, although the basement is heated.

We have hammered most of the loose stuff away, and vacuumed the loose dust.

Now I want to finish with ceramic tile.

We will level the concrete floor with a modified polymer thin-set concrete.

To prep/finish the laundry room floor with tile:

Should we install a modified mortar + tile?

    Or

Should we install modified Mortar + Cement Backer Board + modified Mortar + Tile?

    Thanks!

  • Why are there no computers under My Network Places??

Two computers, XPP, connected via router. I can ping comp.A from comp.B using 192.168.0.100 and also using the computer name, comp.A., and vice-versa. Workgroup is the same on both computers. Firewall is turned off. NetBIOS installed.

I can also share printers and files on each computer, and even map the drive on each computer, it even remaps after reboot.

But I cannot see comp.A from comp.B using 'My Network Places'->MS Windows Network-> Workgroup. I can see comp.B (and the shares) but nothing from comp.A.

Anyone help me with this? It is the same on both computers.

  • How can I test the LAN speed of an office network?

    Setup:

5 newer P4 computers, XPP, office 2003, no firewall, no antivirus(yet)networked through D-link router to share internet and two dot matrix printers and a database program.

On one of the computers (the file server, celeron 2.4 256mbRAM), all 4 computers network to this one computer to run the database program and share printers on the file server.

After installing office 2003, the network seems slower.

How can I test the response of the network, to isolate if it is the file server computer, the database program, or something running in XPP?

How can I improve the network response from the file server?

  • I need a recommendation on a office file server computer.?

Need to replace an office computer.

The computer shares a database program with four other computers all networked to this one main computer.

Would a higher power computer be enough like a core 2 duo 1.83, 1gb RAM, 320mb HD, 10/100 NIC and nvidia video card?

    Do I need RAID?

Do I need a server computer? We are only running XPP, office2003.

Office only work, no games, light Internet surfing, antivirus running, some web multimedia.

  • How can I disable USB key/drives from reading/installing on XP/2000?

For security reasons, USB flash drives need to be disabled on XP/2000 systems.

I found one can change this in the registy:

    HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/USBSTOR /start=4

    which works.

    But also there was this:

    3) Change permissions on the key, removing all inherited perms, and setting System:Read, Everyone:Deny

which I didn't understand what to do there.

Also, if the USB drive has already been installed, and now you change the registy to start=4, the key still is recognized in XP.

How can I remove what USB flash devices have already been installed?

We still need to use the USB ports for printer/keyboards/mouse and some other external hardware used here.

    Thanks.
