How can I disable USB key/drives from reading/installing on XP/2000?
For security reasons, USB flash drives need to be disabled on XP/2000 systems.
I found one can change this in the registy:
HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/USBSTOR /start=4
which works.
But also there was this:
3) Change permissions on the key, removing all inherited perms, and setting System:Read, Everyone:Deny
which I didn't understand what to do there.
Also, if the USB drive has already been installed, and now you change the registy to start=4, the key still is recognized in XP.
How can I remove what USB flash devices have already been installed?
We still need to use the USB ports for printer/keyboards/mouse and some other external hardware used here.
Thanks.

You can try to plug in the key that has already been installed, go to device manager and disable the device. Then, remove user rights for installing devices.
(Start>run>mmc>file>add remove snap in>add>group policy object editor>add>finish>close>ok>local computer policy-computer configuration-windows settings-security settings-local policies-user rights>load and unload drivers.)

that is my very own journey that a pair of million/2 of the highschool instructors (and faculty professors too - heads up!) are petty "directors," clocking out and in for their paltry paychecks, whilst the different a million/2 are genuine educators with a love of studying and scholars. you purely would desire to shop your head up. no longer lots you're able to do once you get the petty sort yet attempt and get in the process the class. EDIT FOR THE indignant persons: The desktops belong to the college, which belongs to the college district, it is funded via the taxpayers of the community, who deliver their toddlers to the colleges for training, to no longer be taken care of like IMBECILES purely through fact they are youthful.
