Is it just me, or does it appear that the number of recalled food products, is increasing in frequency?
In Canada, yesterday, it was green onions contaminated with salmonella: http://www.torontosun.com/life/healthandfitness/20...
Today, it's cookies with metal chips: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/100818/health/h...
And, just last week it was some kind of sliced meat.
Is this just run-of-the-mill greed and societal complacency? What are your thoughts?

2 AnswersToronto1 decade agoIs there anything "homemade" that can be added to the water of fresh cut flowers to help extend their life?
I buy one or two every so often (for cheap) and the florist I buy from doesn't include that "little packet" to extend the life of the flowers. I was wondering if anyone knew the ingredients of these "packets" so that maybe I could cook up a home remedy to prevent premature wilting??
Thanx in advance, all!!
5 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agoHow come ALL of the spammers who email me want to sell me Viagra or Cialis?
I get nothing else and the subject lines are hilarious: "Dip into the passion ocean", "you'll never deflate when you take these pills", or "look no further for harder drilling". LOL.
I mean, are these spammers just able to get past spam guard better than others? Is there an exorbitant amount of this stuff floating around somewhere? I don't get it. A little variety in my spam would be nice ;-) :-).

Seems a little frivolous to me.
4 AnswersWomen's Health1 decade agoExcuse me (in advance) for being so computer illiterate, but why do I keep getting the following warning...?
Warning: "A script on this page has been stopped due to a low memory condition". Anyone know what this means and how I can remedy the problem?
This appears to be a problem because when this error message pops up, things disappear on my computer, like my "home icon" or the "refresh icon". Before this happens, my computer seems to take bloody forever to load pages.
Heeeeelp?! ;-) :-).
I love anyone who might be able to help. LOL. Seriously, mucho time and money saved with some advice, so hoping someone knows something about this :-). Now, I just hope I've put this in the correct category. *Sheesh* :-).
BTW: I have a laptop, if that makes any difference.

15 AnswersMarriage & Divorce1 decade agoDoes Buspirone (Buspar) have anti-emetic properties?
I was told by a medico, today, that Buspirone *does* have anti-emetic properties. Arising from where, I have no idea. Maybe this information is false.
From what I understand, the major classes of drugs with anti-emetic activity are: anti-histamines (H1 receptor antagonists), phenothiazine anti-psychotics (like, Prochlorperazine--inhibiting primarily D2 and histamine), 5-HT3 receptor antagonists, and Lorazepam (binding to subset of GABA-a/BzR receptors).
Buspirone is a serotonin 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist, so I have no idea how this drug could offer anti-emesis. I have read, though, that it also functions as a dopamine D2, α1, and α2-adrenergic receptor antagonist, albeit, to a lesser degree. Would the latter account for an anti-emetic effect? Perhaps anti-emesis arises only through anxiolysis among individuals with primarily gastrointestinal anxiety sxs. I don't know. Anyone have any idea?

9 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoHow could inhibiting the reuptake of epinephrine possibly be effective in the case of clinical anxiety?
SNRI's are commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders. I understand how inhibiting serotonin may be efficacious in light of various symptoms, but inhibiting epinephrine/adrenaline? This seems illogical and inappropriate for clinical anxiety, especially in light of the possible provision of SSRI's or benzos.
I've had a couple people attempt to explain the hypothesized causal (?) link between symptomology and efficacy, but I still don't get it.
Can anyone provide a scientific explanation of the underlying mechanism of action, here, resulting in alleviation of anxiety-specific sxs?
3 AnswersMedicine1 decade agoHow does one know which drugs are mediated by a GPCR?
Does the difference simply lie in knowing whether a particular drug is centrally- versus peripherally-acting?
3 AnswersMedicine1 decade agoWhen would Prochlorperazine be an appropriate choice for severe anxiety?
I have read this is sometimes prescribed, short-term, for "severe" anxiety. Not sure if this is true. With antidopamergic, anticholinergic, and antihistamine properties, I don't see how this is appropriate. Certainly, not a first-line agent (?).
Is short-term anxiolysis (until tolerance) simply achieved through histamine antagonism? Why not a heafty initial dose of a long acting benzo for severe anxiety?

6 AnswersMedicine1 decade agoWhy do most people experience amnesia following general anesthesia, while others experience none at all?
Is this simply individual variability in tendency to cognitively rehearse what is said following the procedure requiring anesthesia? Perhaps, this in combination with willingness to feel vulnerable, or to trust? Just some thoughts. But, does anyone know why it seems that the majority of people have difficulty or can not recall events following general anesthesia, while there are a few outliers who recall everything?
