Reactions to solids (allergic or other)?

My son is a pro when it comes to his solids. He turned 6 months on the 21st and has been on them since 5 months. His desire to eat more has doubled in the last few days alone and he's pigging back the cereal like it's nobody's business.....loves sweet potatoes, not too fussy about fruits other than bananas, but he'll eat them.

Anyhow, to my question.

If you came across a food that your baby seemed to have a reaction to, what were the symptoms? I introduce ONE new food about every 3-4 days, usually at lunch time feedings, but last night I introduced butternut squash to him and this morning he woke up with VERY bright red cheeks (especially his left) and bumpy like a rash. I know he's teething (already has 2 bottom teeth), and he has not had this from teething before so how can I tell if it's from the new food or something else? It doesn't seem to be bothering him and he's not spitting up anything at all.

Does your son turn his head to the left while he sleeps? Sounds like a rash caused by excessive drooling, related to teething. A food reaction is indicated by trouble breathing, swelling, vomiting, diarhea, etc. Bright cheeks and a rash sound more like teething :) All you can do is try it again and see if it happens again, waiting until both disappear.

    Good luck!

It is probably from the teething. This is common, my son had the same red cheeks with two teeth and not the other 4. So teething can be different each time around.

I doubt the butternut squash would pose any allergies at this point because it runs in the same family as the sweet potato, yams etc....but if you are concerned, leave it off the menu and wait another few weeks and try it again.

Generally an allergy will be stomach problems with or without a rash, bowel problems, fussiness...etc

    But it is your call.

    All the best!

The rash could be hives, or it could just be from excessive drool or a change in laundry products.

The best way to tell if it's from the food is to stop giving it to him for now, let the rash clear, and then try to reintroduce it later.

When my food allergic kids have a reaction to a food, the earliest signs of reaction is usually a rash, followed by a stuffy nose, fussiness, and later, mucous in their poop (at least when they were babies). Sometimes they get diarrhea, facial swelling or start to cough or wheeze.

My kids with food allergies have had the full spectrum of allergy testing for confirmation.

An allergic reaction to anything can involve any or all of a whole slew of symptoms such as rash, runny nose, wheezing, sneezing, cough, itching, diarrhea, stomach pain, swelling of the face, lips or throat, low blood pressure or loss of consciousness.

Source(s): 5 children, 2 of whom have allergies, including life-threatening food allergies.

Our babies have the same birthday, and the same problem. She also has her 2 bottom teeth like your son. I took my daughter to the doctor for her 6 month shots this morning and asked her pediatrician about a similar rash on her chin. He said it was just chaffed form all the drooling caused by teething.
