Psychic, precognition, cold reading, or just plain batshit crazy?

Question

Is it possible to read someones mind, or just know everything about that person just by meeting them?

Here's the thing, ever since I was in my early teens (now in early 30's) I have been able to "read" people.  Usually I don't do it because if you mention it to someone, they automatically want you to "read" them usually to prove me right/wrong.  Now with some people I can just see them and their life is like an open book to me, usually I "view" these people in a broad sense, and I get the basic rundown of what the person is like and whether I want to associate with said individual;  At times I get the warning flags (as I call them) popping up left right and centre, yet I'll choose to ignore them hoping I am wrong for whatever reason (99% of the time I should have listened to myself).  Even now with my wife, I find I know what she's thinking even if she doesn't say anything, whether it be good or bad I know, I ask only to initiate the conversation so she can get whatever it is she has to say off her chest before it builds up...mind you sometimes I'll just ignore it, because I know what it is and don't feel up to dealing with it.  
  Now as I've said I would read people, tell them about their lives, their childhood, if there was abuse in their life, likes/dislikes etc...And I still see it.
  But every once in awhile it gets weird, like I can hear people thinking, not so bad one at a time, in a crowded place though it's really disorientating and makes me feel ill.

 I suppose my questions are,
 A) Has anyone else gone through this?
 B) WTF is it?
 C) Is there an off switch?

Well, i wouldn't say i can hear people thinking, but i can generally tell what a person's life has been like most of the time just based on a few things that they might say (if you can tell without them mentioning anything then that is just... wow... amazing!).

I'm not sure what it is, or why some people might be able to do it while most others can't, but maybe it's just like a sixth sense.

And since i said it's like a sixth sense, just like other senses, it can't really be turned off. 

I wish i could help you more with this but i am in my teens now and if i still have it when i'm in my 30's, i think it would be very annoying and hard to deal with. I could tell you that you can go to a psychiatrist and they could probably give you some medication, but i think you would have already thought of that by now, so...yeah (plus, maybe you don't want to take medication or you don't want it to go away completely, which is very understandable).

Look in the mirror, decide if what's on the outside out defines what's on the inside? Question really is if you believe it as you know yourself and how true and honest you find in what you lack or gain as an individual human- you activate as a vice if you want to, some people made the world, some think it!! You are who you are, wouldnt you ask yourself why you feel that way instead of if it's true or not? We 'FEEL' because we know!

I say screw the off switch it may be hard to know about the loved one and whats on her mind cause you dont want to invade her privacy but id embrace it focus on it and learn how it works to understand it than maybe you can block it out kind of like kids and selective hearing you say clean and disney world all they heard is disney world lol but id love to be like you i keep getting screwed over by people it would come in handy dont put it out there keep it tour secret and use it as your weapon
