What is the best route from Venice to Cinque Terra by train?

Available to travel from Friday morning and wanting to be able to explore a bit in day light. Any of the 5 towns as destination is fine so arriving from either direction is possible. What are stops that we should make to explore between Venice and 5 Terra? We are finding connections to La Spezia are not very good, and looking for options that locals or experienced travellers might know.

Can any one offer an alternative coastal place to explore (Sorrento and Positano are already on the agenda) that might be easier to get to, but is still beautiful and interesting?

Unfortunately, the night train from Venice to Nice was cancelled some time ago. That used to be the best connection from Venice to Cinque Terre because you could sleep on the train to Genova and then change trains early in the morning to get to Cinque Terre for a full day.

You could break up the trip and stop in Pisa/Lucca along the way for the night or alternatively go to Genova and stop for the night, but there are no really great connections from Venice to Cinque Terre. From where I live, I catch the 5:22 am train from Bologna and change in Parma arriving in Monterosso at 10:17 am - that's the earliest option without an overnight stay. From Venice, there's a 3:11 am night train from Mestre that will connect to the early Bologna train. You could also stay on the 3:11 night train all the way to Genove and change to a train to Monterosso there, but you'll arrive in Cinque Terre later.

Other coastal areas you might consider from Venice are the area of the east coast from Rimini to Gabbice Mare. This won't be anything like Cinque Terre though. If you mean this coming Friday, it's not a particularly great time to be at any of the beach areas. Carnevale will be starting next weekend in Venice too. Polignano al Mare, south of Bari, is an interesting coastal town, but it's another long trip from Venice.

I am afraid you need to chance. Venice to La Spezia. La Spezia to .... Riomaggiore?

Get a map and see, then use the italian train website. Good choice, the Cinque Terre Park area is stunning. ANd don't miss to walk through the walking trail.See second link
