how much formula will I need per week?

Hello! We are adopting a baby girl in July and I am trying to figure out how much formula we will need per week. We will be using powdered formula in the regular size cans. Can someone tell me on average how many cans they use in a week?

Thanks so much!

Update:

thanks so much! Oh, she is not born yet! We are adopting right from the hosp!

Generally, newborns are supposed to receive 2 ounces every 3 hours, as a general guideline. That's EVERY 3 hours, even overnight. So, that's 16 ounces a day.

Another guideline I have heard is 2 1/4-2 1/2 times the infant's body weight in pounds. So, if she's 6.5 pounds, that's roughly 16 ounces.

Remember, it's just a general guideline.

Note: YOU CAN induce lactation in yourself safely and easily with a drug called Domperidone. (Reglan is DANGEROUS, please don't use.) "Breast is best," so you may want to consider it, at least. Please look up articles by Dr. Jack Newman

May I also recommend Earth's Best Organic formula, if you do breastfeed? It does not contain melamine.

Buy the bigger cans and it will save you money in the long run. At first they drink about 2-4 oz every few hours. So you won't go through as much when they are first born about a can maybe can and a half a week maybe less it just depends on the baby. Then later on you will need two cans sometimes two and a half a week.

Congrats on the adoption! Don't stock up too much on formula, I made the mistake of doing that and my baby ended up having really bad spitting up issues due to reflux. The doctor changed his milk and the spitting up has reduced dramatically. They have formula for all different types of babies. Those who are lactose intolerant, fussy, gassy, colicky, and the list goes on! I would just start with 2 or 3 cans and see how she does. Good luck!!!!

Well, how old is she? Newborns can easily go through 2 cans/week since they are eating constantly(normally every 2-3 hours).

I'd buy three of them/week just to be on the safe side. However, I wouldn't stock up until you get your baby girl. That way you can 'test' out formulas and find the right one that works for her.

I went through about 2 cans a week, give or take a day or so. I've kept to this usage throughout her whole 6 months of life, allowing for variations due to growth spurts.

A good idea is to buy one can of soy or sensitive style formula, one with extra iron, and one can of generic. That way you'll be prepared for any digestive or health issues you might not know about prior to birth.

    Congrats on the adoption!

I personally breastfeed but on average a baby will eat 25-30oz per day in milk. I have no idea how many cans, but sometimes you can get the big cans cheaper than if you get the smaller cans and I'm sure you'll use it all before it expires.

Good luck with your new baby!!

About 2 cans a week just to be safe because they hit a lot of growth spurts which can cause a baby to eat more.

how old is she? i would say 32-40 oz a day so...that makes... 4 cans of 12.9 oz pouder formula :) per week
