Windows 2000 Won't Start Up!?
Here's the story from the beginning: i downloaded AVG Free antivirus and Spybot Search and Destroy and something popped up from one of those programs saying they found something and like the idiot that i am, i deleted it without finding out what it did. immediately after deleting, the computer popped up something that said something was wrong with one of the service packs and to stick in the cd to install it again otherwise my computer would crash. again, like the idiot that i am, i chose to ignore that, and my computer functioned fine up to when i shut it down yesterday night. Now today when i try opening it up, it won't open--it'll just keep repeating the whole startup process without getting anywhere. i know how to completely get rid of everything on that computer and reinstall everything but then i'll lose my important files. Does anyone know how to reinstall the service packs without losing any files? Note: I am not a computer whiz so please try to go easy with me.
please be serious--i'm not looking for "get a mac" or "throw your computer out the window". i need to figure out how to fix this because there are some files on my computer that i can't lose. my computer won't open at all right now and i have no idea how to reinstall a service pack from a CD. thoughts, anyone?
Gene M, i'm not sure what you mean? the cd i have i can install service packs on. i don't know how to reinstall a service pack without deleting my files. could you explain step by step? i'm really bad with computers.

You can also try to re-install from the CD. When it gets to a point in the install process, it will say "a windows install has been found, do you want to repair?" That will also keep all your data files intact.
EDIT
Not the service pack, the original XP cd or the manufacturers recovery CD. After the repair, you will need to reinstall all the patches and service packs from Windows.
Edit 2
You need either the original Microsoft XP CD or the recovery CD with XP on it from the computer manufacturer. The service packs have nothing to do with it, you need to put them back AFTER you repair your system.

If abode windows wont load often you should purely try possibility-free mode if that fails then you surely can consistently; positioned your abode windows disc interior the computing gadget on boot up and chosen the restoration function, reload an image (in case you've been sensible sufficient to make one) or reinstall abode windows once you should. a virulent disease should not be protecting you from loading up possibility-free mode, because it disables some issues necessary for most virus' to run making them a lot less complicated to get rid of.

the best thing to do is not mess with it and take the CPU to best buy and for about $100 they will fix get rid of all viruses
and do all standard maintance
if you try you may lose all of the stuff on the computer

use the system restore function, not the system recovery. it keeps your programs and files but reinstalls the functional programs
