I love biology; it is a hobby and passion of mine. I am currently a third year undergrad working for a degree in biology. Answering questions in biology is what I do best. I try only to answer questions I know the answer to; I'm not out there to make points by answering lots of questions. I have no problem with you adding me as a contact however I only add people to my contact list that I know personaly.

  • Sucrose decreasing pH of urine?

In a physiology lab recently I had done a study on kidney function. The subjects we had who consumed a 20% sucrose (in water) solution had a decrease in pH (mean decrease 5.9 to 5.7).

Can you think of any logical reason why this may have been? All the subjects had normally functioning kidneys.

  • Speedometer on a 2000 accord is slow by about 10km/h?

I have a 2000 accord that says I'm going faster that I really am. I've tested it a few times with different cars following me and for example when my speedometer says I'm doing 80 I'm actually doing about 72. The dealership wants a few hundred bucks to replace the speedometer but they only said it "might work". (I'm not that concerned because I'm not getting any speeding tickets)

Any suggestions as to what it might be and how to do an easy fix? In case anyone is wondering I haven't modified the car in any way, so that shouldn't be considered.

  • Why do Texans assume all sayings come from Texas?

It always seems that when a Texan goes to use a saying they start it off with "There's a saying from/in Texas...". It really only seems to me that its the Texans that do that and why do they think that every saying comes from Texas?

  • Is this funny?

So at 12 midnight last night I went to the thermostat that controls the temperature of my house to turn down the temperature so my house would cool off. Then suddenly with out warning I realized that I had received a letter in the mail from my editor who double checks my work.

She was commenting on an observation she made of my written book. In the letter she made a note to mention that my autobiography of my self was nothing more than a written list of unnecessary redundancies repeated more than once.

Was this funny? Yes or no?

  • Is cracking your fingers truly bad for you?

I'm not going to choose any answer as a best answer unless it cites a crediable source that I can easly check my self. Wikipedia and Answers.com (which uses wikipedia as a source) are not crediable sources.

  • Can explain how to do this calculus question to me?

On a test I had recently it had this question:

Let a>0 and b>0 be given constants. Let R be the region in the first quadrant limited by y=ax^2 and y=b. Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating R about the y-axis.

I know the answer and I can sketch the region properly but I still don't understand the reasoning as to why my professer used a diffrent function to solve than I did.

  • Change this math equation to be true...?

    52 = 32

    Here are the rules:

You can move any number once to anywhere in the equatio, for example 2 = 532

You can add any mathmatical operation to make it true, for example 5+2 = 32

You cannot remove a number from the equation (so it can't be 5 = 2+3)

The answer is not 52 does not equal 32

First correct answer gets the 10 points.

  • How do you use throwing knives?

I own a set of throwing knives but have no clue how to properly throw them. How am I supposed to hold them, what type of action do I use to throw them, etc? A web site with pictures on how to do this would be of great help.

Oh, and please no crappy sarcastic answers like “you throw them” and don’t copy-paste a wiki page if one exists. Thanks.

  • New possable subcategory for Science & Mathematics?

Does anyone here (who often spends time in the chemistry or biology sections) think that a "biochemistry" subcategory would be useful?

I sure notice a lot of questions in the biology section that have more to do with chemistry then they do biology because it is more of a biochemistry type of question.

  • I deleted my own answers to questions but they still show up in the list of questions I answered?

I, not yahoo, deleted 2 of my answers because I found out the answer I submitted was already submitted by some one else. How ever it still shows up in my list of questions I answered. Are they still counting towards my % of best answers? Are they even supposed to still be in the list of questions i answered? (one of these questions is the "How does the cell membrane decide what to let in to the cell and what to keep out? how does it let stuff in?")
