Motherboard gone. Is hard drive still okay?
I've been told by four computer shops that the motherboard on my two-year-old Toshiba Satellite is "pfssst". Is there a chance that my hard drive might still be okay, and that I could still retrieve data from it? Thanks for helping an old lady who's computer illiterate. :)

Yes there's a good chance and you can easily take out the drive and restore the data yourself.
You have many options. You can take out the hard drive, plug it into a desktop computer using a SATA cable and the appropriate power connector from the power supply. You can purchase a hard drive usb connector and back up your data that way. Or you can purchase a new laptop that supports duel hard drives and connect the old hard drive as a secondary hard drive.

Your hard drive is very likely to be perfectly OK. The data stored on it will be accessible if you attach the hard drive to another computer or laptop using an external caddy. However, at two years old I would be inclined to get the motherboard replaced by a reputable repairer after which you would be able to use your laptop again with the original hard drive.

If the hard drive doesn't smell burnt or if they didn't say that it's gone pfsssst then, yes you could still retrieve some data off of it!!! But you need to take it to a computer shop.

Hi, ma'am.
If the motherboard is broken, there's high chances that the hard drive is still OK, if the PC didn't shut down while moving files, downloading files, etc. Even if so, the hard drive CAN be recovered, either by experts or some alternate ways.

If the disk controller did not misbehave a lot before the motherboard died, then the hard drive should still be OK.

yes your hard drive could be working provided that you use it as a secondary device
