Is there a chance I'll get the job?

On 11/3 I had a job interview with a credit union. Specifically, I first had to take a written assessment test, which I passed. Had I failed, I wouldn't even have made it to the face to face interview phase. Next, I had an interview with the HR rep and one of the managers in the department that I would potentially be working in. I feel things went good. I let them know that a manager I used to work with at my old job works there currently, and that she gave me a recommendation. I had provided recommendations from Linked In, as well as references. I also signed one of those background check consent forms. The HR rep stated it would be around wo weeks or so before I hear anything, but that it may be longer due to the credit union doing an extensive background check (criminal and credit, among other things), and the check is done by an outside agency.

Long story short, it's been over three weeks and I haven't heard anything. I did call the HR lady on 11/24, but she wasn't in so I left a message. Didn't hear from her, so I assume she was on Thanksgiving vacation. I guess I'm worried because I've been out of work for over a year now and I really want this job. Any advice? Is it safe to assume I'm in the background check phase (background/credit squeaky clean)?

Update:

Alayni, thanks for your reply. My former manager stated she interviewed with them in October of last year and didn't start until 12/1. I think they're background checks are very thorough. I call back Monday.

I would keep calling for a follow up. That makes you look good anyway, like you are really dedicated. I think it is safe to assume you are in that phase though, but I haven't really ever heard of anything taking 3 weeks to go through that process. I just got a job myself, and the entire process took a week from assessment taking to interview to background check to my first day of work. I would call back often, until you get someone on the phone and not just leaving messages. Find out what is going on.
