What are my rights with my son starting school (special needs)?

My son (4.5) has autism and is due to start school in Sept (mainstream). We are having a meeting with school and autism team and SALT on Monday, they want to delay him starting until Oct to let the new starters settle in and also want him to go full days straight away. We think they are delaying the start as they haven't got a teaching assistant for him yet (job still isn't even advertised). We want him to start in Sept with all the other children and for him to go morning up until christmas to see how it goes. What are our rights as parents or do we have to do what the school says. (he has a full statement - 30 hours). Thanks

Update:

It is a small village school with 48 pupils, 9 will be starting in Sept along with our son.

i think you need parent partnership involved because that is wrong what they are doing

my daughter was statmented from 2 years of age and the support always been in place and been sorted in plenty of time before she started nursey and full time

if he statemented where his is iep meeing??

they should let him go in september then he can mix in with other kids normally (not so it suits them )

if job not been advertised they may have some one ready to do it who works in school

here the link for parent partnership (they there to support you and know the system inside out)

    http://www.parentpartnership.org.uk/

They can't use the fact they don't have dedicated teaching assistant as an excuse not to start him - there are still the better part of two months until the start of term & contrary to popular belief schools don't close down completely, there will be staff in the school over the holidays & they can do their hiring during the quiet period.

I would take darl's advice & contact the Parent Partnership in your area, they should be able to advise you.

You could also try speaking to the Special Needs Officer for your child and/or the Educational Psychologist.

Have you spoken to the SENCO at the nursery he's currently attending? What's her opinion? Does s/he think your son could cope with going fulltime?

i used to be a particular ed instructor in California. at the beginning, the faculty can't stress your baby into specific training with out your consent. As he's merely 3, with maximum young babies that are that youthful, it incredibly is merely too early to tell no count if it incredibly is a adulthood challenge or a actual behavioral challenge. as quickly as a baby that youthful is in specific Ed. it incredibly is fairly confusing to get that baby out of it. i might propose changing instructors and or instructions and notice if problems persist. additionally, i might tell the staff you're tape recording all conferences you're having with them. that's criminal and should not be a challenge in any respect. Refuse to sign any papers they provide you and notice in the adventure that your regular practitioner provides some thing in writing affirming that distinctive training isn't advised. you're additionally allowed to have your guy or woman individuals attempt and have an autonomous evaluation of your baby by applying a 0.33 social gathering in case you so choose for. permit the faculty understand which you at the instant are not pleased with what is going on. pass to the faculty introduced and enable them to understand you prefer to video reveal your baby in this instructors college room besides. If the faculty would not permit you observe then some thing is heavily incorrect and additionally then you definately ought to take your baby out of that surroundings ASAP. study your parental rights and record each and every thing and all human beings that they are saying. there are a number of advocates and communities accessible who would be prepared to assist. I even have considered many instructors who choose for a baby needs specific ed whilst quite the instructor became not waiting to easily instruct to the the way the baby mandatory. study your rights and don't be afraid to make waves. sturdy success you have your artwork cut back out for you.
