why are flights SO expensive right now?

They seem to have doubled in the last two years! I'm trying to go to South Dakota from Winnipeg, Manitoba and can't find anything under $700! Last time I flew there I paid $500.... and that was after a last minute $200 price jump. I mean... the flight only takes two hours and for double the price I just returned from flying 15 times the distance! What's the deal with these prices right now?

Update:

k... i know gas prices have gone up... and i understand that's why flights are up... i guess what i was wondering more was why a two hour flight is half the price of a 30 hour flight a just took? like it's almost the same price to take local flights as international in some cases.

It rises because oil price increases, maintenance, airport fees also rise up.

Oil prices. If the airlines did not buy any extra fuel last year when the prices were lower then they will have to pay the huge price increases now. I know Easyjet bought 40% of their fuel for this year, last year so therefore can still offer good prices for flights.

While ticket prices have gone up in the last year or two...they still don't compare to the rate the gas has gone up in the last two years. Even with these price increases, and charges for other things such as checked bags....the airlines still aren't making money.

I totally know what you mean!!

here in the uk in dollars its a $600 dollar price jump!!!!

reasons: areoplanes are now becoming toooooo expensive to run:

    fuel prices are going up

    food prices go up

and the risk of global warming cut down the number of flights

It is def. the oil prices ... its about time that airlines start charging for what it costs to fly. Instead of undercutting the next guy getting a lower fair.. causing all the layoffs airlines are facing.

Hello, have you not seen gas prices sky rocket in the past few months?

  • 1 decade ago

they are very expensive because they need to pay for gas too. hell if you think filling up an usv is expensive imagine how much it would cost to fill up a beoing. Also, due to recession, few people are traveling so thats also jacking up the prices.
