Are you allowed to leave the Vancouver airport on an international layover?

I asked a question on here before about leaving the airport in Vancouver during a layover, and that seemed fine, but then someone else said that they don't want you to if you're flying overseas from there. I'll be coming from Winnipeg and flying to Hong Kong 12 hours later....so I don't really want to sit in the airport that whole time. I don't mind having to go through security and customs again, but does someone know for sure whether or not I'm really allowed to leave?

If you are collecting your bags, I don't see any reason you can't leave the airport and come back to check in again for your next flight.

But if you leave the airport and leave your baggage behind (if the airlines are handling it during the layover), that's a security issue (imaging someone planting a bomb in their bag, checking it, then leaving the airport to be out of harm's way when the bomb goes off). You might have major problems with security when you get back to check in for your next flight.

The only way to know for sure is to contact the airline you'll be flying to Hong Kong and ask them.

You say that your trip is from USA to Asia. In that case, I assume that you are flying on a domestic route (on AA) from your home airport to LAX. Since you haven't left the country, you will be free to leave the secure area in LAX before you go to the international departure area. There are some provisos: If you are in the US on a visa or visa waiver then you surrender the white or green stub when you check in for the international flight. Therefore you might not be able to check in for the international flight when you check in at your home airport. This would also mean that you would have to claim your baggage in LAX and go to the international terminal for checkin before your China Air flight. You should check this case in advance because the extra time to checkin would be significant and would cut into your lunch. On the other hand, if your are a citizen or a permanent resident then you have no such obstacles. Enjoy your trip. Don't forget to send postcards :-)

You can come and go, but you will have to go through security each time you re-enter the airport. No reason to sit in the terminal building for 12 hours!

You can leave. Just exit via customs and immigration. If you were not a Canadian citizen and did not have a Visa to Canada, that is another story. It is the same everywhere in the developed world from Sydney Australia to London.

My parents were just flying through YVR, arriving domestically and departing international (same as you). You can leave the airport.

    Have a great trip!

Why don't you call and find out?
