How much can I expect to pay in US/Canadian dollars for electronics in Hong Kong?

so, apparently nathan road is cheap, but it is "safer" for a number of reasons to go to an "actual store" so can anyone give me estimated dollar figures on how much different kinds of electronics would cost....for example ipod or a digital camera? and if I bought anything like this while on a layover, would i have to pay duty on it or whatever?

It is reasonably similar to US prices, as the HK dollar is pegged to the American dollar. I would recommend the Fortress electronics chain as the best place to buy, as it is cheap, reliable and has great costumer service. You can find Fortress outlets throughout the city, as Hong Kong people love their gadgets!

I bought the Nikon D40 there a few months ago, which cost me approximately 4000 HK dollars. They even threw in a few extras such as a 2GB memory card, tripod, camera bag and card reader for that price.

It totally depends on what you are buying. I bought a sony s500i (phone) in October I saved $50 (cnd) then if I bought it here. however the same phone could only be found at speciality cellphone stores who import phones.

The Drawback to buying my phone there is that Sony does not respect warranties from outside the country it was bought. That being said do your research!

Also I was lucky to have gotten a great deal, but for the most part Electronics are similarly priced all over the world. This is because the competition is SO hot.

The only advantages I can think of (buying in HK) is that the selection is wider, for example camera`s they will have models that arena`t sold in north America. And if you find something that is sold both in Hong Kong and North America, the one in HK is more likely to have extras, ie, batteries, carrying case, come in different colours, ect.

There are NO taxes in HK on goods sold (yet). The Duty would depend on where you are from, and how long you have been out of your home country. Keep in mind total value you are allowed to bring home duty free.

in order to get great deals on electronics in HK you need to know your way around and know the local customs of buying and bargaining and also normal prices at home...... and last but not least being able to spot a cheap fake.....everything you will find in HK will be cheaper than any other place because of the lack of taxes and most item made in china. there are good "made in china" stuff and bad" made in china" stuff and dont be fooled: EVERYTHING ON SALE THERE IS MADE IN CHINA......the catch is that the minute you will enter a shop or walk pass it, they will see you as a foreigner and therefore triple the asking price...... dont believe the prices you are quoted, everything has its price when you start talking and bargaining!!!!!!

also you need time to do all that, so if you are on a layover and in a rush then no benefit will be made as you will surely pay a very high price for items.

if you have a chinese friend to take along with you (preferably poor) then you will have an idea of the prices and might be easier for you to handle, as long as your friend is looking for your best interest.
