It is an abbreviation for Greenwich Mean Time.

If you want to get technical it is the solar mean time of the longitude 0° at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, London, England, UK.

It is the time in the Uk from the last Sunday in October to the penultimate Sunday in March. For the remainder of the year the UK has British Summer Time which is one hour ahead of GMT (GMT+1).

The Uk is not the only country that has GMT. The others are: Ireland and Portugal and the following dependencies: Canary Islands (Spain) and Faroe Islands (Denmark). These countries also add an hour (GMT+) in summer.

The following countries observed GMT throughout the entire year: Burkina faso, The Gambia, Ghana, Guines, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Sahrawi Arab democratic Republic, Senegal, Sierre Leone and Togo plus the following British dependencies: Ascension, St Helena and Tristan da Cunha.

Greenwich Mean Time, pretty much the old name of Universal Time Coordinated, which is also known as "Zulu time"

It's the time used by the UK in winter, but more importantly, it's the time used by shortwave-broadcasters and anybody else who has to coordinate things across several timezones.

GMT means ' Greenwich Mean Time'.

Historically, the 'Zero ' meridian was set at Greenwich , London.  The zero meridian being 12 noon.  thereby navigators (sea and air) set their clocks to it.

If you go to Greenwich, London, you can see  the ' Zero  Meridian' . It is a permanent white line in the grounds/estate of Greenwich Observatory.  You can straddle the white line, and have one foot in the Eastern hemisphere , and the other foot in the Western hemisphere.

So if you woke up at 8 GMT, it means you woke up at  8:00 am (ante meridian)(morning).

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time.   The time at the Royal Observatory Greenwich England (just south of London). Which is the starting point for all the time zones (Longitude Zero Degrees).

    Greenwich Mean Time.

IF YOU WOKE Zup at 8 GMT you woke up at 2 am. or pm CST.

GMT was replaced by UTC time as the standard worldwide in 2000. Universal Coordinated Time. GMT is outdated

     There are 37 time zones.

Zulu time is military time and uses a34 hour clock for EACH time zonr. It is NOT GMT time and GMT time did. NOT replace UTC.time. UTC time replaced GMT time.

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. It’s the time zone that England uses, and it’s considered the standard that all other time zones are compared to.
