Why do their population vary so much?

The United States and Canada are more or less similar in size. Why is it the population in Canada is so much less than the population of the United States?

The population in Canada is 38 million and the United States is 328 million.

That is because the population of Canada was less than that of the US 100, and 200 years ago. The size of essentially uninhabited land area is pretty much irrelevant.
