Gunbroker bidding?

So I’ve noticed that when I put the minimum bid listed it INSTANTLY says that I was unsuccessful and that the minimum is now higher. If I put in the new minimum bid it INSTANTLY tells me the same: unsuccessful and that the bid is even higher (and higher than the previous minimum bid minimum). What gives? It seems too fast for a person to outbid me. I feel I’m competing against an automated program, not a person. And you will repeat this taking the bid to ridiculous prices never achieving the minimum bid required, regardless of the minimum bid listed. Is it a scam to get the higher prices? Is it automated? What gives?

It means someone has placed a bid much much higher than you have and keeps showing you that you have to increase your bid to compete.  It is not set up to show you the highest bid made and makes you keep bidding to find the highest price.  Perfectly legit, just frustrating.

I hope you are sitting down Aspen because you have won my good socialist that longs for the downfall of the American way of life of the day award for lying above and beyond the call of duty for a good socialist that longs for the downfall of the American way of life!  Congratuations and keep up the amazing lies!

Someone has entered a higher maximum bid, but the price of the item only goes a small amount above a competing, but lesser bid. You need to bid higher. Say the price shows current bid is $300, the other bidder may have set his max bid at $400, but there were no other bids over $300. If you bid $500 for it the top bid becomes $400 plus the bid increment. A bid under $400 would be instantly countered up to the $400 dollars.

There are other bidders that have already put in the max they are willing to pay, and yes, it is automated.

If you are not the first bidder, what you see is not the minimum bid, but some  increment above the current bid. When the auction closes you can view the bid history and you might see there were a dozen bids, but only three bidders interested in the item.

The process is all explained on the web site.
