Was Malcolm X wrong when he said that African-Americans should have their own country within the USA?

It's the official doctrine of the Nation Of Islam that the white man should arrange for the descendants of African slaves to be established in their own nation - not as part of the USA but independent from it, either on land now part of the USA or elsewhere.

Since Malcolm X enunciated that doctrine before he began to differentiate his own teachings from those of Elijah Muhammed, then he wasn't "wrong".  He was correctly stating the NOI doctrine (which you can see listed in every edition of The Final Call - the newspaper that NOI members sell on street corners every week...each edition includes a feature called "What the Muslims Want").

Do I agree with that idea?  I would rather that all the citizens and other residents of the USA could treat each other in a manner that lets all coexist on equal terms.  I consider that to be the fundamental objective of the USA.  It would not be easy to be as proud of a less-ambitious aim.  I'd therefore consider such an exodus to signal a failure of America's defining promise.

But it's not up to me to decide for everyone whether that dream has failed.  It's up to the person or group who's getting the short end of the stick to decide when they've tried long enough and have suffered sufficient mistreatment and abuse.  So I'm not in a position to say if the exodus idea is wrong.

However, I CAN say that it's not an idea that could be at all straightforward to carry out.  Setting aside the question of where this place would be, the first worry is "What happens to those who don't want to emigrate?" - because there will certainly be hundreds of thousands, if not millions.  And it gets more and more complicated and grim from there.

Yes he was wrong.  He's literally talking about more segregation which is not good for anyone.

Yes he was wrong. Because that kind of concentration would make it a target for white terrorists that are trying to take over America.
