How come in soccer someone is 10 from the goal and they kick it over the cross bar?

Yeah I know.  Seems impossible but it happens.  I’ve seen it happen much closer than that. And you think ‘how is that possible you utter ****, my granny could stick it in from there’ . But that’s why we watch football.

They took their eye off the ball (thus making bad contact)

They tried to get too fancy beating the keeper/defender.

They misjudged the speed, spin, or angle the ball was approaching them.

The ball was deflected before they made contact

The ball took a bad bounce on its approach.  

They just aren't that good to start with.

They were fouled.

They were pressured but not fouled.

They purposely missed b/c they were bought off by the mob.

They purposely missed b/c they are sleeping with the keeper's wife and know that if he has a bad game that he'll be needy when he gets home making it impossible for her to get away to come and meet him at his place.

Different reasons possible - under pressure from an opponent, poor technique (leaning backwards), tiredness,  ball bobbles up on a divot.......
