Medicare is federal; doesn't matter what state you live in. There is no such thing as free Medicare. There are monthly premiums and if the state doesn't pay them then you do. The state might pay your Medicare premiums, copays and deductibles under a program called Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) if your income and resources are under certain limits. The state will also pay Medicare premiums if you are entitled to SSI. You need to contact your county welfare office about that.

Perhaps you are thinking about MediCal from the state of California - not Medicare - in which case you STILL need to contact the state of California.

Anyone can have free healthcare for life if they serve a hitch in the US Marines, or Army, or Air Force, or Navy.
