This is one of those really gray areas for me.
I've watched horses hauling logs, police dogs at work, sheepdogs shepherding sheep, and beagles sniffing for bugs. And the animals all seemed to enjoy their work.
However, i've also watched the pony rides and I know that not all animals appreciate their jobs.
I did do a little research and the coconut collecting monkeys go to school to learn how to collect coconuts. and the school is run by buddhist monks. so not sure it could be too bad.
I don't buy many coconut products as it is. so maybe until i learn more about this I won't buy any.
But to answer your question, technically its vegan. Just like palm oil is technically vegan. and you certainly don't have to be vegan to boycott products that you have issues with.

Yes veganism doesn't concern itself with harvest techniques just that the product is not from an animal.

Yes, as long as the monkeys are well treated. No different from using working horses on farms in temperate countries.

Huffington Post is codswallop so don't believe anything you read on there. Hell, Yahoo Answers is more credible than Huffington Post.
