When and by whom was photography invented?
I think it was invented in the 19th century in Italy, but I do not know the exact year or the name of the inventor.
I understand that before the photographic camera there was a device called a 'camera obscura' [Italian for 'dark room'] which projected an image, it need a means to fix the image.
A camera obscura was used by artists to help with perspective etc.

2 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 month agoWhere were these Biblical places? [Gilead and Ophir]?
Gilead famed for its balm, mentioned in Genesis and Jeremiah and Ophir for its gold. I think that Gilead was in the northern part of modern Jordan [please confirm, give modern name, and are scents/spices etc still grown there?]. I have no idea where Ophir was.

4 AnswersReligion & Spirituality2 months agoCan anyone remember [and name] this variety of tulip from my description?
Have no picture. The variety used to be popular here in southern England back in the 1970s, but I have not seen it at all in recent years. It was only about 6 to 8 inches tall considerably shorter than other varieties. It flowered in March, which is earlier than most tulips, and the flowers opened wide rather than to a cup-shape. The petals were mainly white or cream-coloured but yellow towards the centre, giving them an appearance resembling waterlilies.
1 AnswerGarden & Landscape3 months agoWhat herbs [dried] should I use when making a tomato-based pasta sauce for prawns?
I have some king prawns which I will have tomorrow in a tomato and onion sauce served with pasta [either penne or spaghetti]. I have some mixed Italian herbs, will this be best or would you use a different blend. Also, how can I prevent the prawns from becoming chewy?
5 AnswersCooking & Recipes3 months agoDo the words 'virus' and 'virulent' have a common origin? [GB English, idk if 'virulent occurs in US English]?
I know that one is a noun and the other an adjective, but as recent events have shown a virus can spread in a virulent manner, as well as the fact the two words share the same first 5 letters.
2 AnswersWords & Wordplay3 months agoWhat is the name of the range of mountains in Ireland which is almost parallel to the south coast?
They are poetically called the Cork and Kerry Mountains because they are located in those counties, but I do not think that is their 'official' name.
1 AnswerGeography3 months agoWhere and when was the first Greek Orthodox Church in GB opened?
My guess would be probably in North London just after the First World War. That is because at the time a number of Greek Cyrriots migrated to GB, many of whom settled in parts of North London.

Sometimes I hear them referred to as 'deadly' but other times that it rarely bites humans and if it does it is only like a bee or wasp sting.
2 AnswersZoology4 months agoWhere is the main source of the River Shannon in Ireland?
I think it may be in Upper Lough Erne, Co Cavan, close to the border with NI, but I do not know for certain. I know that the Shannon has many tributaries which drain a large area of the central part of Ireland, this Q is about its main stream.

5 AnswersOther - Food & Drink4 months agoCHRISTIAN PARENTS - how do you teach your children the Lord's Prayer and its meaning?
I remember struggling with it as a child. I was told it was the Lord's Prayer and was very important when I was about 5, but did not have its meanings properly explained and I was into my teens before I could understand some of it, as it does use language not in general use.
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality4 months agoWhat is the origin of the word 'Humbug'? Both meanings.?
In the sense used by Scrooge in Dickins novel to mean nonsense' and a 'waste of time' and a general way of expressing his dislike of Christmas and all that is associated with it.
Also as the name os a peppermint flavour sugar confection with black and white stripes usually with a hard candy outer layer and a chewy centre. They are aka Everton Mints, probably due to their place of origin [for non-Brits information, Everton is a town near Liverpool in NW England]

3 AnswersOther - Food & Drink5 months agoDo you think dinosaur fossils are the reason for dragon myths around the world?
Dinosaurs were only identified as a category of extinct animals in the 19th century. Yet people would surely have found them before that. Dragon myths occur in various countries far apart as Wales and China. They are also mentioned in the Bible as a metaphor for the devil [Daniel and Revelation]. Could the remains of dinosaurs have given rise to these legends?
9 AnswersOther - Science5 months agoHow do you think parents can explain to younger children that they will have fewer and less costly presents this Christmas?
This Q is about parents who have a reduced income this year because of COVID 19, and where the children are young enough to believe in Father Christmas/Santa Claus. How can it be explained that Christmas will be lower key and fewer presents this year, should parents disillusion children about Father Christmas at a younger age than they otherwise would? No good parents want to see their children upset, especially at Christmas, so how can they explain they may not get the costly gifts on their wish list.
