Why does the One Piece anime have a different start from the manga?

So I read the One Piece manga the 1st one. But I was watching the first episode on crunchy roll called One Piece: East Blue episode 1 but the episode starts of with Luffy popping out of a barrel and kicking ***! Am I watching the wrong one I am so confused please any one piece fan let me know I feel very confused!

Anime and manga rarely are the exact same mostly taking from the manga animes follow the basic idea. The best example is full metal alchemist and brotherhood. Both made from the same manga two totally different stories. So the reason can differ they could have been unable to animate it at the time or they thought it was a better story this way. But you are watching the right anime, east blue was the name of the first couple arcs and the name is the equivalent of being season 1.
