If you are camping at Whistler then there are many things to do there from cultural activities such as the Audain Art Museum or the First Nations exhibit, both at around $20 per person for an adult. You can take the gondola up the mountain and spend time there (although it is pricey, over $100 for a family), there are also hikes on various trails, a number of lakes and things like canoeing, cycling, white water rafting, and ATV's. That is just to name a few so for one or two days there is no reason to leave the area, I just came back from a week there and still did not do everything I wanted to.
A trip to Vancouver Island is just that, a trip and you could not accomplish both in a couple of days. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to the nearest ferry terminal from Whistler and then an additional 1 and 3/4 hours to travel on the ferry to Vancouver Island (plus whatever wait you have and it can be up to 2 hours if busy). Vancouver Island is not small and to see it would easily take over a week and, to experience it completely, probably 2 weeks. If you are making a separate trip to Vancouver Island let us know what part and we can assist you with more complete information.

Given how much stuff Whistler Village has to offer, never mind the mountain itself you should have plenty to do without having to actually go anywhere. Vancouver has tons of stuff [but it is a city of millions] including Stanley Park, getting to and from Vancouver Island would pretty much take up your whole day.

Hike, go to the top, do ATV, walk around the town, do Strathcona Falls, etc...
By the way Vancouver Island is quite a distance from Whistler and will take several hours to get to the ferry, then on the ferry, see the island and then back. Vancouver itself is way closer

Squamish - nice little town to check out. There are a couple of really nice waterfalls in the area - Shannon Falls and I forget the name of the other, but it's cool. There is an old silver mine at Britannia Beach that has turned into a museum.
