Telemarketer threatened to rape me?

I received a call from a scam. I called it out as such, stating that it is illegal for those wishing to do business in my country to say they have a prior business relationship with you when they do not. He immediately began swearing and calling me dirty names; I told him this does not bode well for convincing me of the legality of the operation if he is so unprofessional. He kept telling me to hang up, so I questioned him if he had this ability, or if I could stay on the line and prevent him from scamming someone else.

He then read my address to me and said he was going to come here and rape me. I flatly told him that what he said was a threat and he had just broken another law by threatening me. He further called me demeaning, dirty names. I asked him who he was, where he was calling from, etc. He asked me why, I said if he was legal, he would know the law required him to give me answers. He evaded and eventually hung up.

I immediately called the police, thinking I would just report the stat, but they said threats of bodily harm required the presence of an officer so they would send one to my home. I felt embarrassed, and said I didn't feel right about taking on officer of the street for a petty little boy trying to be big. I agreed to come in for an appointment to file tomorrow.

What kind of person thinks it is okay to say such a thing, and especially when called on it? The more I sit with this, the more uneasy I feel. I am getting scared. Help!

Update:

I understand I could have acted better, but I cannot change time (and I am unlikely to face another telemarketer who would do that - they are generally normal people).

I'm scared and my roommate is too (he kept saying her name: I kept correcting him that I was not her.). I'm not just scared of him showing up, but that people are crazy and take revenge - he has our number and address. I read stories in the paper of people taking crazy revenge well beyond the "slight" they endured.

Update 2:

As a former telemarketer, I don't appreciate the assumption that they are far away. I was constantly trying to convince callers that I was, in fact, in the same country. As well, my local police just recently busted a scam. If I hadn't been a telemarketer and called him an insult to legal telemarketers, I wouldn't have been on the phone that long with him.

lock your doors at night and report everything he said to the police, he is probably miles away in another country, but still take precautions, i am sorry this happened to you, i wish you the best.

Sounds pretty awful, and I sympathize, but what exactly are you asking us that you can't ask the police tomorrow?

The guy is likely half a world away.

In the future I suggest you just hang up.

Does not count, it has to physically happen
