o alternate splicing of exons: making an mRNA that can be translated to something else useful
o 5' guanosine cap: decreasing the likelihood that the mRNA will get degraded by RNAases
o 3' poly-A tail: increases the likelihood the mRNA will be exported from the nucleus. Decreases the likelihood that the mRNA will get degraded by RNAases
