Are they documents that your lawyer wrote or helped you to obtain? You might ask your local bar association for advice. Usually when you fire someone, you still owe them for work they have already done.

Depends on details. Exact requirements vary by location.

Generally speaking they can retain your files until paid. However, they cannot do so with anything that may "prejudice" your rights. If you're disputing fees, that also can alter things.

If they are original documents that you brought him, they should have been copied, but you would deserve them back. If his office located them, made them or otherwise had a hand in getting them into a folder he has, you pay first.

if he wrote them or typed them **** their his. if there written by you, he should give them back. but really if you owe him money before you fired him pay the damn man. you cant just order blueprints for a house then say to the maker your fired and im taking them. whether you dont like him pay the man for what he did

Yes he can. Those documents were amassed as the "fruit of his brow" and you have to pay for that.

You have to pay him for all the work he has done.
