Does assigning a drive letter format the hard drive?
I discovered the answer to this a while ago when I upgraded my computer but I can t remember the answer.
What I am going to do today is install a new motherboard and CPU into my computer case, and I was wondering if when I plug my hard drives back in (I have multiple) and assign them drive letters using disk management, will this force me to format my hard drives or will it allow you to do so without formatting?
I am relatively sure that assigning a drive letter last time didn t force me to format my hard drive, but I want to be sure.
Thanks.

No, it shouldn't cause you to have to format a hard drive. Just be sure that you assign the "C" drive which normally has your OS on it as "C". If you don't want to use disk management, just plug in the "C" drive first and then boot up the computer. Then plug in your other drives and boot it up.

Nope, you are free to assign letters to drives and rename them without performing a format.
