What are these blemishes on my apples?

We have a Granny Smith tree. It gives great-tasting apples, but many of them have these blemishes. They're rough to the touch and slightly raised, like a mole on a person's skin. They're also just on the skin so the flesh underneath isn't really affected. But I've wondered what these things are. Anyone know?

I can't say exactly what it is, but more than likely it is a fungal infection specifically attacking the fruit. As to what kind of fungal infection, I have no idea. However most fungal infections are caused by an overly moist environment for the plant. This is especially true for cherries which are susceptible to cherry leaf spot. I nearly had two montmorency cherries die from it. Severity differs, but if you want a good first step then look for what to limit moisture levels to and around the tree. Because unless you live in a very dry zone or have droughts commonly then they should not need very much water aside from rain and that is for many orchard trees.

Perhaps reading about "Russet" on the attached website will give you more information. Our apples always had marks on them, but they were really good. Hope this helps you out : http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/factsheets/ecogar...
