Shorting ETFs?

I am thinking of trying to balance my IRA with a shorting ETF very soon. However, I am not sure about Vanguard accepting them within my brokerage account. Yes, i know I can call them- -but I thought I would try here first. Thanks

There are ETFs that short and move in the opposite direction of the markets.

I know that there are some brokers that allow you to buy/sell options as long as you have the stock/etf or "cash margin" in the IRA to cover them, but there the potential loss is known. I don't know any that allow you to short a stock or similar because potential loss is unknown and possibly unlimited if a stock shoots up, and since contributions are limited, they cannot do a margin call like they could in a taxable account.

You need to reexamine the concept of "balancing."
