How was a convicted witch's spirit bound in the 1800s?

I am looking for historical information regarding how a convicted witch would have had his/her spirit bound in the 1800s (specifically in North America).

Are there any particular items that would have been used? Prayers / curses?

Or any myths at the time connected to the binding of the witches' spirit?

I want to be clear: I am NOT looking to bind any spirits, this is strictly research regarding some projects I am working on.

Please site your source.

Thank you

Before love beads in the 1960s, before the rosary, a person could string together rocks, pearls or diamonds, depending on their religion or belief system. Crystals and diamonds can hold energy but it would take a fair bit of knowledge to bind a piece of their soul - meaning personality part. SR&E: Soul Retrieval and Extraction. (See Medicine Garden for further information.) Originally it was believed that you could take a piece of personality, the more pieces, the more the person malfunctioned, and hide it in something that is aware but not alive. Old legends say not to go out of body and jump into a rock because you may get stuck. Some believe this soul piece would have to be retrieved and put back into the personality in order for the soul to leave the earth plane and go to the other side (heaven). By keeping them alive, they thought they could put the piece in the object and do magic on the object to affect the person. If the person was killed then they are only the other side in the hell layer. Recent ideas include taking a soul piece and throwing it into various energy vortexes, into someone on the other side, or in some contraption. It is up to you if you believe it. Look into the old Indian magic. I think they carried something in their pouch in order to bind. If the binder dies, then the soul can escape because the magic is no longer placed on the object holding the soul piece. If you are really good, if you understood quantum mechanics, you can throw the whole person onto the other side in air, or no air, and never release them. But you could. I know for a fact that is true. I think binding means whatever you can do to bind. The 1800s was a transitional time and I think the religious push left these ideas behind for a while. The old dark arts speak of it, but again that knowledge belongs to various Indians. Does the Don Juan series have this in it?
