What happens if you buy something over your credit card limit?

My discover card has $183 left in the balance

What would happen if i bought something online that was $185?

Also would the item still ship or would it be cancelled?

In some cases, the charge will be declined. If it's only a small amount, like the $2 in your example, it will probably go thru but you might be charged an overlimit fee.

However, I did a quick google check and it appears DiscoverCard no longer charges overlimit fees, Not sure if this is for all accounts or just a new "It" card.

For $2 it will probably go through, but you may have an 'overlimit fee'. That can be as much as $35, or even more. That info is usually posted on the credit card website. Some people don't have an overlimit fee if they have a really good credit score.

The sale won't go through. It will be declined by your credit card company.

It depends what type of card policy you have. Some may deny the sale. Some may allow it but charge higher interest. Others don't mind as long as all overages are paid off with the next statement.

the sale might or might not be approved. if it is approved, your account might be frozen and/or they might charge you a penalty fee.

btw it's not good for your credit score to have a credit card that's at the limit. someday you might want to buy a car or even a house but this will make it more difficult.

You could be charged an overlimit fee.
