How can I make my singing voice more aggressive?

Im in a rock/metal band and we are playing master of puppets by metallica, and i have to sing it while playing guitar. We had to tune our guitars down from E standard to Eb tuning so i can stay in key. I can add grit to my voice and i can hit all the notes but my voice sounds really whiny and weak.

Hear how james's voice sounds really aggresive and powerful in this song? I cant find any youtube lessons for this and I dont have a vocal teacher. My band has a show coming up in a month and we are playing this song so thats all the time i have to practice. Help please???

Bonus: Singing this song and playing guitar at the same time is kinda difficult, and i tend to slack on one or the other depending on which im focusing on, is this just something ill get the hang of with a lot of practice?

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://biturl.im/aURW3

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

First of all, I don't blame you for tuning down. It's gonna be quite a strain on your vocal chords to sustain singing that high in this style.

Don't start worrying about sounding whiny, metal needs balls to sing, not necessarily nice sounding tones. Have a look for some videos on voice projection and singing/breathing from your diaphragm. Just a little tip that sounds silly but really helps. imagine there's a string attached to the top of your head gently pulling you up straight, (by all means give yourself a good foot spacing if you want to power stance) it'll open you up more meaning more space for air and your sound will resonate through your chest. It's difficult at first when you've got your guitar strapped on weighing you down but being hunched over it can really restrict your breathing. (also, being stood more upright gives an illusion of more authority, perfect when your fronting up your band!)

A lot of the gravely/husky/hard-rock/aggressive sound is caused by actual damage to the vocal chords. I don't mean this in a bad way, some of my favourite artist's voices are totally shot. Take Tom Waits for example- (not to everyone's taste I admit but I think he's a genius) he used to chain smoke and drink all day and then scream into his pillow at night to get his super rough, raspy tone.

A lot of getting the aggression is tapping into your own feelings and letting them come out in your performance, but some of it will be sped up with smoking and hard drink; WHICH I AM NOT CONDONING OR ENDORSING FOR A SECOND as I don't know how old you are, nor do I wish alcoholism on anyone!

As for playing and singing simultaneously, just keep at it.

You will get there. If it's just this song that's giving you trouble, play and play through the riffs over and over, marking the lyrics through in your head. Try practicing playing it faster than you need to, always easier to slow something down afterwards than to speed up. If it's just general singing while playing, find some nice simple songs, maybe acoustic style to practice, once you get it start picking harder songs, especially ones with odd timings. Try The Kinks- All Day and all of the Night. The riffs easy enough but the vocals fit in a slightly odd way, good for practice.

Sorry it's such an essay but hopefully you'll find some of this helpful.

Make it happen, you'll smash it!

If you want to know a very good vocal coach try to visit https://tr.im/HeR4h an online vocal coaching tutorial. Everything, ranging from breathing fundamentals, vocalizing exercises, techniques on singing high and low notes, how to not go off-key/out of tune/off-sync, musicianship and music theory, proper diction and articulation, and a lot more are covered, all in our native language. It can be quite technical in nature, but it really helps since it covers the musical aspect of singing deeply and not just concentrates on how to impress people with your vocal range, riffs and runs and other cliches that do not necessarily make one a complete vocalist.

I play and sing at the same time .eventually you will get to the point that you never have to think about one or the other. Our drummer when we are playing delights in tell dirty jokes while the Bass player is singing. we have held conversations while playing a song. if you know the material its in the hands not the mind that takes over. its muscle memory.i play my complicated leads with my eye,s closed, i know the parts. i just let it flow.
