why is the word liberal used as an insult?

The definition of Liberal is: "Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry."

Only in the world of conservatives and/or bigots is this a bad thing..

The word "Liberal" was forcibly stolen and corrupted by evil men who intentionally perverted the use and meaning of the word.

In the long forgotten past, the word "Liberal" described honorable and principled men who held to a philosophy of government that advocated Constitutional Republicanism.

Constitutional Republicanism is a type of government almost unknown to most of the world. America was originally a Constitutional Republic. A Constitutional Republic defined is characterized by a very small government with limits on its powers of taxation and whose other powers are strictly limited by rigorously enforced Constitutional edicts.

But modern Liberals are nothing more and nothing less than Communists, Socialists and Dictators. Modern Liberals promote, advocate and enforce the centralization of all political power into an all powerful central government. The honorable old Liberals of the 19th century must be spinning in their graves over the outrageous corruption and modern use of the word "Liberal."

absolutely everyone who has ever use the word "liberal" as an insult is hurling insults at a philosophy that has helped them at some point in their lives... either by giving them rights and freedoms (minorities and women), or by looking out for them in their time of need, or simply by helping someone they know and love with those same things. despite popular opinion, the Liberals are the ones who are upholding the Constitution nowadays.

liberals fight for the best interests of everyone, even the moronic people who think liberals are evil commies coming to take their freedoms and their guns and tell them how to think and feel.

I certainly don't use the word "conservative" as an insult, even though a lot of conservatives right now have given that philosophy a very bad name.

I am a Progressive and I don't consider the tag "liberal" an insult. CONS throw this word around because they think it is an insult but it is not. In some ways it is a badge of honor. The CONS have very little going for them so thay have to latch onto whatever they can, just ignore their nonsense.

In the U.S., Liberals are associated with the Hippies of the 60's and 70's. Hippies were considered to be the moral trash of society.....lazy, unclean, drug-addled and cowardly.

That is why "liberal" is not a complementary term.

Unfortunately, the "hippy thing" is still going strong. Most of the Hippies have not moved on to be productive citizens and a new generation is carrying on their gutter-level lifestyle.

That only works on baby boomers. I love guns and hate abortions but I still consider myself liberal.
