I have a problem with writing an essay about overcoming an obstacle?

It's for my county's scholarship website. The prompt says "Describe the greatest challenge you have had to face or expect to face in the future."

Now everybody has their challenges, and so did I, I suppose. But the thing is that all of my past is not something I want to write about, because some of it is extreme.

Other than that, difficulty almost doesn't exist in my life. I have somehow made myself a nihilist, someone who doesn't find any significance to anything in life. It's hard to think about how to describe a challenge because I do not see obstacles as obstacles. I simply do not care about them.

So I believe my only option is to think of something in the future that will challenge me, but there again I can't describe it.

What do I do? The essay is required.

    Overcoming Obstacles Essay

Just by you asking this question is an obstacle for you. You said "it's hard to think about how to describe a challenge because I do not see obstacles as obstacles. I simply do not care about them". Well, you DO CARE about this obstacle because you want help writing an essay. You do not have to discuss your past challenges but you can start writing about "dealing with overseen challenges". That is a challenge it itself. As you go through life, we all face challenges and we learn by them. We don't run from them. You will have challenges in the future. You don't know what they are..but you have to be strong enough to deal with them and not pretend they don't exist. It could be an exam, it could be getting good grades, graduating from college, finding a job, car broke down, death in a family, marriage, children etc.etc. Just take the time to think about how you would face the "unknown".

I think you're right about avoiding your own life as a subject.

How about creating an obstacle in order to overcome it? My sister-in-law can't stand the sight of something she's afraid of - she *must* go towards it and overcome the fear. That's just how she's made. So when she was in Jamaica and saw the flying-on-a-kite thing, it was a knee-jerk reaction for her to ride on it. She used to have a fear of water, took classes, and now she swims in Lake Ontario.

The point is - could you think of something that intimidates you? Anything at all. Bugs, roller coasters, the dark, the light, heights, etc. Then plan out exactly how you will approach this thing. My brother was afraid of snakes so he went to the library and took out all the books on snakes - for a year. Now he's an encyclopedia on snakes, and he's not afraid. Or would it be lessons? Or cognitive behavioural therapy?

It's not that you'd really do all this, just that you could make an essay out of it if you research all the details.

You should be completely honest and follow your beliefs to their logical conclusion. It would seem that your biggest challenge will be how to negotiate life with a nihilistic and probably insincere attitude. How will you overcome people's negative reactions to you? How will you find happiness? Why do you even want a scholarship?

How about a tall tale about someone who is set a task of writing a tall tale and the lengths to which they go to find inspiration, only to find out in trying to find inspiration their journey is itself a heroic adventure. As for the adventure, that need some thought in itself. What about a quest to find the government agency that is suppressing the imagination of young people for its own twisted reasons? (the cause for the difficulty in coming up with a tall tale).
