Licenses grant permission to do something whereas certificates demonstrate competence through testing or training. In the United States, the FAA issues pilot certificates. Unfortunately, there is always someone on Yahoo! obsessed enough to jump on those who use the term "pilot license". You might see someone give a confusing, non-helpful answer about there being "no such thing" when a newbie asks about a pilot license, but I I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Pilots and laymen alike use the terms interchangeably.

No difference it is the same thing -
The US/FAA does not issue "licences" -
They issue "certificates" instead -
But most pilots in USA say "I have a pilot license -
They really should say "I have a pilot certificate" -
In almost all other countries in the world, aviation authorities issue licenCes -
Spells with a "C" in all countries, except in USA, they spell it with an "S" -
