Where do I start if I want to draw manga? Any websites/links that can help?

I want to get into art, but comic book style (American) is either really easy, or really difficult depending on whose style you want to imitate. Manga doesn't seem easy, but it sorta is (My friend said you don't need much training. Within two days you can make decent drawings.) but the style is very much the same. Of course Manga and anime has different styles, but from what I see, they are similar.

I don't want to make any generalizations, though I just did, but I just want to draw somrthing that isn't nothing. I draw out my name, maybe an animal, but nothing else. I want to expand my drawing just for the hell of it.

Any websites with good tutorials or instructions will be appreciated.

Update:

Daisy, i said I want to draw for the hell of it. I'm not going to be a professional musician, but I play guitar anyway. I am, by trade, a journalist and writer. I just want to get into art so I can vent my emotions in other ways. Painting is too expensive, and manga seems like a nice starting point. I'll do it for the joy of doing it.

Hi! Im getting into manga drawing myself since these year there are allot of great places to check out but ill warn you it wont make any easier manga in my opinion is probably trickier than comics.I haven't become anywhere near professional or even amateur and I have tried to absorb as much as I can and though you aren't trying to be professional its good to look at these topics and try to try to find your own style.Almost ever authors style is different it might not be obvious but its there. For example of the story Fruit Baskets style and the story Arisa and then add Naruto and Pokemon to the list and you have gotten so many kinds of drawing styles.

    Lets start with the basics=

The different genres, shoujo , shonen, e.c.t

Anatomy the study of body plan most specifically the human body.

Folds, facial expressions, perspective, body language.

    A greater understanding of comics.

And more, such as Japanese (Though it is not needed the are contests that hold manga on the web and publish them.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Luckily there are great tutorials on the internet and great books you can get from the library or buy. and even some videos.

A accomplished American Manga-ka with his own video tutorials a youtube channel and books. http://www.youtube.com/user/markcrilley/about

DeviantArt a site especially made for art and holds many manga tutorials .http://www.deviantart.com/

One of my favorite groups there is =http://learnmanga.deviantart.com/

A great manga forum that has ok tutorials = http://forums.mangaraiders.com/

When in doubt about something specific Goggle or search deviantArt.

Some books to check out are understanding comics by Scott McCloud.(Yes I know it doesn't say Manga but it covers everything there and the writer understands Manga and since Manga Is really Japanese comics it will help you even if you know allot about these subject.

Study a real Manga book a, find a artist you like and try to see what they did don't copy there style but investigate it by drawing it once or twice. Also some authors in Manga reveal what the used in there books the kind of pens coloring tips e.c.t. You can also find some manga art you like on deviantart and compare the styles and the way they did these and that.

    .

Also becoming a american Manga artist is possible it just seems harder than average, just wanted to mention that even through these is going to be a hobby.

Check out Sophiechan or markcrilley on YouTube.

I am just going to be honest your chance are slim to none. To be a manga artist you would have to know there are thousands of different styles-- if you really were a talented artist you would have noticed.

It is very competitive lots of japanese want to become a mangaka.

Most start out as a apprentices to proffesional Mangakas.

If you don't want to be pinching pennies in this profession learn japanese-- one of the hardest languages. Then you have to move to japan.

Chances of success are slim to none esp. For you who could really careless since its second choice. You should stick to American comics. It's easier. You just have to know human anatomy.

Not to be mean just stating facts.

You would also need to do nothing but draw all day everyday to meet deadline. And then If your lucky it might get published. And if it doesn't go over kiss everything all that hard work goodbye
