How can I stop nail polish from ruining my nails?

I haven't worn nail polish in almost a year because whenever I do, it makes my nails very thin and they start to peel. I have tried a few OPI products that are supposed to strengthen and protect nails, but they don't work.

I have used polishes from a variety of brands and they have all done this.

Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening so that I can wear nail polish again?

Coat them before and after with a nail hardener then apply the nail polish of your choice.
