Memory Loss in Horses?

Is it possible for horses to suffer from short-term or long-term memory loss? This is a question of simple curiosity, I don't suspect any horse I know to have it.

It makes sense that it would be possible, especially in older horses, however I have never met any horse that suffered from memory loss.

I have an 18 year old mare and she seems to forget the thing we trained on the day before but it may be selective memory :) It seems like something possible, horses get many of the same things humans get so I wouldn't be surprised if horses suffered memory loss. I don't know how someone could figure out if a horse had memory loss but with all of the new brain technology there may be something soon if it becomes an issue. I have never seen anything about a horse with memory loss but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Good question.

if there's a medical reason (horse got hit on the head, was born messed up or otherwise suffered some medical mishap) then yes of course it's possible.

but if the horse is healthy, then no.

horses have the best memories, better than humans do.

it's funny how many people claim that their horses have memory loss when it comes to training. um, yeah, clearly the training was lacking and not the horse's memory. lol. geez, people, take responsibility. :-P

You've got a good factor. We had a horse rear on her gate, wreck it, and hit hear head on the concrete aisle-way. She used to be despatched away for six months to get better. The vet used to be out like each different day. Supposedly, she forgot the whole thing. She went on this treatment to "support her cells take into account". Individually I think this is a load of crap. I mean I do feel horses can have reminiscence loss from a accident, but I do not consider this is what occurred to her. I think she just had a concussion or whatever.

I find that horses have very good memories. I have not seen memory loss in horses.

I have worked several heavy Impressive bred horses that were very hard to get through to and then all of a sudden they would seem to get it and work as I wanted them to. I would put them up feeling that finialy I had gained some ground.

Then the next day they would have no idea of what they had done correctly the day before.Yes must have been loss of memory

I had a 30+ year old mare die of liver failure last spring. The failure allowed toxins to the overwhelm the brain. For a while she seemed not to remember her own field... just wandering... and ultimately her brain was completely confused and not functioning... she was blind... and we had to put her down.

I don't know for sure, of course, that her memory went, and not her eyes or cognition. But it did seem as if perhaps it did.

    Interesting question.
