4 AnswersPolitics2 years agoAny experience with Cushings and chronic lowgrade laminitis?
I have a 30 year old Cushingoid pony with chronic low level laminitis.
He's been on pergolide for more than 10 years, and time is catching up to him - treatments are less and less effective. He's a good weight, has seasonal allergies in the summer only, and is still a happy guy.
He has developed chronic low grade laminitis, which I've treated as vet recommended - senior food, no grass, daily bute, daily pergolide, and daily small dose of acepromazine (opens blood vessels in/to feet to reduce inflammation).
I'm considering switching him to a low starch/ low carb feed and seeing if that helps.
Has anyone tried any of these? Did it help with laminitis? Which ones would you recommend?
Any other suggestions for helping this pony?
2 AnswersHorses4 years agoUsing gates for stall walls?
I have a large run-in shelter for my horses at pasture. There are three stalls, needed only for farrier visits, and the rest of the time just left open.
The rest of the shelter I can clean with a front end loader, but the stalls must be done by hand.
I'm considering replacing the interior partiticions and stall fronts with pipe gates, so they can all be removed for easier cleaning.
Does anyone have any experience using pipe gates between stalls? Advantages/disadvantages? Chances of injury?
Interested to hear your experiences.
1 AnswerHorses4 years agoInjured deer... what would you do?
An hour ago, I noticed a young deer (fawned this year, probably) eating my rose bushes. I got my camera to try to take a pic out the front window.
Then I realized that it had a flail fracture of the front leg. The hoof and pastern were held onto the leg by a thread of hide, and were obviously frozen solid and dead.
My best friend is a vet. I know these can't be fixed; I know that deer almost invariably die even when they treat them for tiny injuries because of the stress.
I called the sheriff to come shoot it. He got here reasonably quickly... only to tell me they weren't allowed to shoot deer unless they were in the road and a hazard to traffic. He cared, but he couldn't do anything.
My only neighbor who hunts is on vacation. None of the local humane societies will come for deer.
So what's next? What would you do?
14 AnswersHorses5 years agoRocking Horses <3?
I now have a grand-daughter! Hooray!
Needless to say, she's going to be getting a rocking horse as soon as she's old enough - she's already met all my horses, and cooed and giggled over them. They were enthralled.
So here's my question: If money were no object and you could have whatever rocking horse your little heart could have desired, what rocking horse would you have wanted? And what would you want as your all time favorite?
Rocking horse, Carousel horse, Horse pedal cart, whatever; what would you chose? Furred, wood, metal, plastic, fantasy or realistic, just what you like best. Links if you got 'em, please!
3 AnswersHorses8 years agoCan you Help the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA)?
Recently, the AVMA advised that the CSA (Controlled Substances Administration) has reinterpreted the statute governing veterinarians carrying controlled substances off site to treat horses and other animals.
It is no longer considered legal to carry controlled substances - including sedatives, anesthetics, and euthanasia solution - unless it is a pre-filled, pre-planned dose. This means if they come to treat an emergency for your horse and it needs one of these, they won't have it on their truck. Your horse will have to wait while they go get it. If they come to your barn and your horse has a broken leg, they won't be able to euthanize it because they won't have the drugs in their truck. If it needs stitching up, too bad; they'll have to schedule an appointment, and bring the anesthetic back with them to do it later. Got a colic that needs palpation? Well, too bad. No sedatives on the truck.
The DEA has already begun telling vets in some states that they are in violation.
Hard to believe, isn't it? Here's the AVMA announcement: http://avmacan.avma.org/avma/issues/alert/?alertid...
Do you want this for your horse? The extra time, extra farm call fees, and unnecessary suffering for your horse while you wait?
Fortunately, a bill has been introduced in Congress - the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act of 2013 (H.R. 1528), which would amend the CSA that currently prohibits veterinarians from transporting controlled substances to treat their animal patients outside of their registered locations: https://www.avma.org/news/pressroom/pages/AVMA-Lau...
Can you help? Please let your congressman know you support this bill. If you click the "Take Action!" link on the page I've linked above, it'll tell you how. If you use their form, just be sure to change the line "I am writing as a member of the veterinary community" to "I am writing as a horse owner" or something similar.
Please help.
5 AnswersHorses8 years agoStopping Political Phone Calls?
Yes, I'm an independent voter in a swing state. No, I don't want to answer 4 surveys a day. No, I don't want to listen to another dozen recorded messages from the campaign or from the candidate. No, I'm not donating money to you. No, I don't want to leave what I'm doing to answer the phone only to find it's another request for money, another survey, another recording. No, I don't want to banter with a person supporting a candidate. No, no, no.
Is there any way to get these guys to leave me alone? A political do not call list? Anything?
4 AnswersCivic Participation9 years agoHorse not Eating; any suggestions?
I have a 30-35 year old Arabian mare.
For the last week, she has not been eating her grain. I've offered different kinds, but she's just not interested.
I've been monitoring her closely; her vitals and gut sounds are all good; she's been pooping regularly (diminishing amounts, as her intake has gone down); she pees normally and is drinking water. Up until today she was eating a good bit of grass.
I had the vet out today, and she said the same thing. Normal vitals, normal gut sounds. She palpated her; no indications of any issues. She examined her teeth and mouth thorougly. I had a fecal done; no problems with worms.
The vet had a few suggestions, but didn't really know what was going on. We've put her on bute for 3 days in case it's due to pain from arthritis (major weather systems going through). If that doesn't work, we'll try banamine.
Anyways, I was wondering if any of you had had similar problems, and if so, what happened?
The mare's only known health problems are old age, arthritis, and Cushings.
Any suggestions are welcome.

22 AnswersHorses1 decade agoLooking for date/time atomic wall clock?
My parents both have Alzheimer's, and need help remembering what the day of the week is and what the actual date (including year) is. They get confused even as to what season it is.
So I'm looking for an atomic wall clock (one of those ones that sets itself, cuz they can't reset a clock anymore) that has the day of the week, the date, the year, and the time on it. I can't find one anywhere. I'll buy over the internet if I can find one.
Any ideas?
4 AnswersOther - Electronics1 decade agoWhat to do with this toad?
I was digging around the barn today, and evidently I dug up a hibernating toad. What's the best thing to do with it?
Bury it?
Leave it in the grass?
Leave it in the barn?
Bring it in till it wakes up, then put it out on a warm day?
I really don't want a pet toad. So what should I do with it? It's going to be 20F tonight, 40F tomorrow.
