If you had $10,000 for a community project, what would you spend it on and why?

For local community:

One of our local shelters that has a daily soup kitchen needs a kitchen. Currently it relies on daily food donations of local organizations or sandwiches and some large electric pots to keep soup warm. Next year the community plans on a fundraiser to help build them a kitchen and larger pantry.

One of my favorite charities:

Project Night Night http://www.projectnightnight.org/ which helps reduce the trauma by providing comfort for homeless children and promoting literacy at the same time. A bookbag, a stuffed animal, a small blanket, and an age appropriate book is given to homeless children. Currently in the USA 1 in 50 children will face homelessness during his or her lifetime.

I would start a group that helped young people find work, with the down turn in the economy they are getting very few chances.
