I started later on in life. My mum was always a keen gardener and although I enjoyed the end result, I a never interested in the gardening side of it myself.

Then when it was my mums 60th birthday, I bought tickets for the Chelsea Fliower Show for us both, and that got me started on it.

I had my own house by then with a small garden at the back with a few things in it and after I had been to Chelsea I completely re-landscaped it and my passion hasnt waned since.

It means everything to me, it is my top hobby and I am never happier when Im planting, pruning, digging, cutting, watering, propagating, you name it. It makes me feel close to nature and as though I am in my own small way, doing something for the good of the planet.

I never cease to get a thrill when the buds start appearing and when a new bulb I have planted starts to grow!

In fact, I love it that much I do it voluntarily in the community too, and meet other gardeners. Thats something too, people who are into gardening all seem to be really nice folk, and more than a little eccentric.

My elementary science school teacher let us order tomato seeds and peat pots. We would watch our plants grow, then take them home for our gardens. I was totally hooked on gardening for the rest of my life. Well, with the exception of ages 18 to 21 when boys and parties temporarily became the focus of my life. Fortunately I married a man who loves gardening too. I always have something new to learn with gardening! People in our neighborhood now hire professionals to design their gardens but I don't really think that their gardens look better than mine.

My grandpa. He used to grow strawberries and I wanted to have some for myself. I was 13 years old when I had my first garden. That was 60 years ago. I have been doing it ever since. I find that home grown vegetables are much better then store bought ones and it is some what cheaper. You can preserve the surplus and enjoy the produce of your efforts all year.

I started gardening when I moved away from home. My hubby and I had a kiddie pool with dirt in it on our eleventh floor balcony. We enjoyed it so much it brought us out of the city and into the country. I'm not great at it but I enjoy it. I do it cause I feel more connected to the earth when my hands are muddy. I love watching a sapling grow and evolve into something we can eat.

I was self motivated and love the feeling of being one with nature.

    Great questions!!!

Let me just start out by saying, what a wonderful and refreshing question? I enjoyed thinking about the answers to this.

I really can't remember not gardening, so I started off very young. I suppose the beginning of the love for gardening began when I was 3. I helped my mom plant pepper seeds in the middle of winter. I remember her poking the holes and making me count the seeds as I planted them. I remember checking on them daily and helping water them, I claimed them as my peppers, remember how exciting the day we put them in the ground was, and remember picking the first pepper as well and I was so proud. (She has now passed on, so this is a wonderful memory for me.)

It continued on from there. My parents always grew a garden in our backyard in town, starting all their own plants and flowers from seeds even beginning in the early months of February for some varieties. Their parents didn't garden, it was there own interest, they learned as they went along, as did my brothers and I.

Their passion grew so much to a point that we all moved out to the country and started a small greenhouse and garden business, vending at farmers markets, and from there things continued to grow, it became my families business and income, and my interest continued to grow as well.

When me and my boyfriend (now husband) bought our first house I was 19. We moved back into a city for work reasons and to better fit our lifestyle at the time. Come spring time, I had an intense urge to get my hands in the soil and knew what my yard was missing, a garden. I didn't want to fathom an entire summer of cooking and not being able to step out into the yard and grab some fresh basil, or a ripe tomato, or a pepper, or zucchini or cucumber to accompany our meal. My old timer neighbors, in there 80's on both sides of us, found it rather shocking and amusing to see their teenage new neighbor digging up half her yard for her garden. I think they were a little skeptical at first of my ambitions, but when I was delivering fresh produce to their doors they were ever so delighted. I took/take great pride in my garden, I love having friends over and sending them home with some fresh goodies.

Now I have a son, this year he planted his first peppers. It's rewarding to me to see him take interest in it, as well as learning such basic and wonderful skills, how to grow and provide for yourself.

Gardening to me now, gives me a feeling of sustainability, a way to provide for my family, and a way to eat in a healthy and eco-friendly manner. It's more then that too, it's a passion, love, interest, and hobby.

My dad. He was a farm boy, came from a long line of them. We always had a big flower and vegetable garden. Don't remember my formal introduction to gardening, seems like I always did it. I've stayed with it because it gives me a feeling of calm and pleasure and comfort and conectedness with my past and family. It's also so gratifying to see your work come to fruition.
