My first GP was his first win, so my entire F1 experience has been coloured by the early years watching him doing miracles. He's the reason that I've never gone overboard about Senna's car control.

If you want me to pick just one racing memory, it's Gilles chasing down Alan Jones at Monaco in 1981. Sure, Jones had a misfire, but that Ferrari was a pig, especially somewhere like Monaco. Harvey Postlethwaite thought it had around one-quarter of the downforce of the Williams, and he was probably being generous.

Away from the track, it could be any one of a dozen interviews. The one he gave in Rio in 1982 where he described exactly the situation which would later lead to his death was particularly poignant after the fact, as were some that he gave in French after Imola.

oh, a lot, actually. i remember him kicking *** in formula atlantic to arrived f1 stars, his entry into f1 in the mclaren was memorable, because he had his own way of working out the lines and corner speeds. what i think is the best memory is his stamina, his will, he never gave up, even when the ferrari didn't run at all (like in 1980). one of the most entertaining races was of course france 1979, his famous duel with arnoux for 2nd place. later that night gilles and rene watched the rerun of the race and enjoyed themselves like little boys about their own behaviour.

the younger generation probably knows little about gilles, but we oldies cherish his legacy. he was and is one of the most admired racers ever.
