is bennadryl safe for dogs (30 lbs) AND nail grooming tips?
i heard that benadryl would be safe to give my 30ish (probably a little more now)
ALSO i could definitely use some tips on how to clip my dogs nails. hes a rescue with a lot of anxieties and he will not allow me to clip his nails... which is a problem seeing as he cuts me on a daily basis... and also i need to fig this out before his nails grow to the point where they cut into the pads of his feet. iv even gotten to the point where i tethered and muzzled him and had a partner to try and keep him still and calm... but it didn't work out because the pup headbutts HARD! i would take him to a professional groomer except that hes a rescue and his socializing skills just aren't there yet. HELP!!!! my next step is to just sedate him and i DON'T want to do that!
I'm not concerned about the groomers not being able to complete the task... I'm concerned about the experience effecting him negatively when it comes to his socializing and meeting new people. keep in mind he was an abused dog and has VERY pronounced separation anxieties.
the reason i ask about the benadryl is that a rash has cropped up under his armpits where the harness goes and it looks a little like hives. my roommate mentioned while i was out of town that his vinyl collar seemed to irritate his skin. we have since switched to a leather collar but never bought a new harness as he only wears it when we leave the house. the rash occurred shortly after a long trip to the lake and he also did lots of swimming with it on. do u think he could really be allergic to vinyl? also his predominate breed is shar pei and their known to have very sensitive skin so i figured it would be good to know how benadryl effects him for future Reference if his rash clears itself overnight
YES! i have successfully clipped snoopy's nails! it took two people and a lot of struggle, but he was more than happy to receive the treats at the end. mommy even spoiled him with a little people food! :D thank u so much for your help! but to whomever else may read this; has anyone had a problem with the rash i described above? how did you solve it?

wrap him really tight in a very large bath towel or blanket, kinda like they swaddle newborn babies ... keep his head out ... he will be completely immobilized and take one paw out at a time ... maybe the first time you do it, just do one paw ... and you have to be firm and assertive that it is going to happen and calm ... if you are stressed and/or anxious to do it, get a professional, at least until he gets used to it ... and whatever you do, just take a small sliver off the top of the nail cuz if you hit the quick and he is already panicky, forget about doing it again ... and you could very easily bring him to the vet or a groomer to have it done ... they are used to dealing with all types of dogs ... just when you are making the appointment explain he is anxious and strong ... benadryl is safe for dogs but why do you want to give the dog benadryl ???

I wouldnt give benadryl to sedate him so you can cut his nails. You have try to use human medicine the least u can but yeah its ok to give it to him i give my 20 pound dog a half and that does the trick for irrataded flea bite.I have a dog that hates it also but you have to cut them and it's best to cut them before the Quik (nerve in toe nail)grows long. So when everybodys relax just pick him up hold him real tight so where he can buck or if it's to big put him on a laminate floor to where he can't get alot of traction. Remember don't act crazy and frantic because he's also feeding off your vib so go in with confidence and reward with some treats and say good doggy after there done He wil forget all about it. I have a friend that when the dog is relaxed she goes over to it and sneaks a few snips at a time. I don't agree with that but it's better than long nails hurting your dogs toes.oh yeah and be sure to go to beauty supply store and buy septic power to stop bleeding quik. $3

Bennadryl is safe for dogs. I am the nail clipping/grinding master at the grooming salon. Whenever I encounter a dog that fights when his nails are being clipped, I restrain his entire body and keep trying until he gives up. I pretty much have to grapple him for 5, 10, 15 minutes, they all give up eventually and calm down. The trick is to make them think they will never win and accept it. If you don't want to take that approach, you can go to the vet and they can prescribe him something stronger than benadryl, most likely a diazepam like xanax. If you don't feel comfortable doing that than your only option may be for the vet to sedate him and clip them while he's asleep.

Why are you wanting to give the dog Benadryl?
Take the dog to the groomer. That's what they do for a living! They are used to dealing with unhappy dogs.
If the groomer can't trim them then he will have to go to the vet.

No reply so I am going to say that nothing is without side effects. I never say a drug is safe. The pros & cons must be weighed against each other.
Talk to your vet. (S)he can tell you if it is "safe", how much to give & may be able to suggest something different for what you are trying to achieve. I can say for sure that if you want to use Benadryl to calm the dog for a toenail trim it is NOT the best choice.

We had to give my dog benadryl to sleep when he was around that weight. It is perfectly fine to give benadryl to the dog, just ask your vet how much to give him.
