How do field flatteners work?

I am doing a project on optics and having a hard time finding any kind of explanation of how field flatteners work in order to fix field curvature. Also, is this the only way to fix field curvature or is there another method?

Field Flateners correct for Petzval field curvature by special lenses in which the focal length of the lens increases in proportion to the light ray angle.
