Dog Breeds/Mutts question?

"Why on earth do people name mutts after their combined parents"

Because of the stupid and/or gullible idiots who think that having a "designer" name means the dog is something really special and not just a poorly-bred mutt.

Used to be that people GAVE AWAY mixed breeds....

This is a major pet peeve of mine, also, though when you look back through the history of dog breeds you'll discover that many breeds came into existence exactly this way. For example the dachsund was a cross between the local terriers and hounds.

I know that where I live there is a person that breeds puggles... they do not have a pug and a beagle, but two puggles, and they breed them and sell the puppies as puggles, so I suppose if you bought two Chipoos and bred them, you could try to sell them as Chipoos... They don't really go by the looks, but by the breeds.

Because with the right sales pitch you can sell ANYTHING to the right impulsive idiot. Look at petshops. With the exception of very young kids EVERYONE should know exactly where those dogs come from. But they are willing to believe any BS fed to them so they can get what they want without having to think about it.

A local shop up here is also run by a guy who breed bulldogs. Guess what is ALWAYS in stock at his store? you guessed it bulldogs, not even remotely of good quality but you can bet someone will pay 1-2 grand for those wrinkly suckers.

People like to have ' designer' things, and sadly this has extended to dogs. Unfortunately most people do not realize the puppies can get not only dominant and wonderful genes, but recessive and poor genes as well. The price is because people are buying these pups up like Coach handbags.

Most people I've met with a 'designer' dog got them because they liked the looks that dog got from it's parents. ...Cuteness factor enter here...

I usually just point people to Petfinder.com so they can rescue a Puggle or whatever 'designer' dog they're looking for :)

i never understood this either. the names people come up with is just a fancy word so they can sell mutts and get a lot of money. its ridiculous. and most of them are not acceptable by akc or ckc.

They are called designer dogs people mix certain breeds together to get more desirable qualities. for instance anything mixed with a poodle (chipoo, Maltipoo, yorkiepoo) has the potential to be hypo allergenic so people who are allergic to dogs yet like say Malteses better than just poodles they would get a maltipoo. hope this helps =D
