Red compost worms are great in indoor planting mixes--I have them in all of my indoor plants. They help cycle nutrients from the potting mix, converting them into castings that are fertilizer for your plants.

Earthworms are not red compost worms, however. If you put a nightcrawler in a potted plant, it will just die. Red compost worms are litter-dwelling surface worms. Smaller than their earthworm cousins, they live under piles of organic matter--leaves, matted grasses, cow pies--between the soil and the organic matter above. They can live in a potting mix that has good drainage and plenty of organic matter, but they don't like nitrate salt fertilizers (like Miracle Grow).

I wouldn't put any kind of worms in with an aloe plant, however. Aloes like to dry out between waterings, and worms can't survive in dry soil.

Earthworms will die, and red wigglers need moist soil that is rich in organic material. It's not really a good idea to put worms indoors unless you put in the effort to maintain them. Also, if you use worms you can't let the soil dry out by accident - it's more work. It may be easier to just add worm castings to your soil.
