I also have a female lab who has hotspots. You need to shave it and put an ointment on it. As far as stopping her from licking it you need to make her stop when she does and tell her no or put a cone on her head so she cant get to it.

I had a beautiful female blk lab..Unfortunately, she had a hot spot on her right hind leg that she licked at and made raw from the time she was about 5 mos. Then she switched to the right front paw and left the back alone..I took her to the vet and was told it's an owner's and vet's worse nightmare. It's not really an allergy most times..Just a neurotic type of behavior which I never could break her of. She had to be put down in 08' as a result of bladder cancer but her front paw was still being licked to that day..I tried it all..Sorry your dog is having this problem.. Try to bear with it..:-(

A hotspot must be contained and should be treated with salt water and / or hibiscrub to keep it free of infection.

I've just had my girlie with one that spread to the width of an outstretched hand within an afternoon. NEVER had one go like that. That was a veterinary job and she is on AB's and fuciderm cream.

It is not usual that I would go to a vet though, but you must stop her licking it. Get a Buster collar or Elizabethan collar whatever you call them but do stop the licking.

Contact your vet and see if they can give you an ointment that has antibacterial properties as well as having a numbing agent in it that your dog won't be hurt if it consumes some.

Take her to the Vet. These are painful, and can become infected, and need treatment. Treat it now before it gets worse.
