Do you have to pay council tax on a flat you don't sleep in?

Our son is starting special school shortly and it is 40 miles away, instead of travelling there and back ttwice a day we are considering renting a flat to use daily from 9am til 3pm when he finishes school. If we don't actually sleep in the flat (or maybe occasionally in winter if the weather is bad) would we have to pay council tax for it. Thanks.

Update:

We do have the choice of transport but he's only 5 and severely autistic so would prefer to take him ourselves just for the first year.

You would be better off securing a room in a B&B for a few months on a long term low rate than renting a flat, if your only needing it for a few hours a day. You are still going to travel twice a day, to school in the morning and back again in the evening. This will put a strain on petrol and car usage as well.

You do realise you are not only going to have to pay council tax, but utilities as well PLUS rent in advance for the first month AND a deposit as well as your normal home?!!!

Why not see what a nice local B&B can do for you for the first 12 months. They may be able to do a deal for you. It would be cheaper and easier than two lots of rents, council tax and bills as well as petrol AND local parking charges.

It is also going to be rather confusing for your son not to mention tiresome. Have a think about this and maybe see if there are other options!

Yes you will have CT to pay as well as utilities etc and you need to consider whether you can even rent anywhere under these circumstances as most of the leases I have ever dealt with include a length of absence clause because of insurance issues. I don't think you will find it easy to rent somewhere that is not going to be lived in on a regular basis and is to be left empty most nights. No landlord is going to like that at all.

    ...

you could also cosnider getting a job in the area of the school for the hours your son is there then you have an extra reason to make the journey twice a day and you will be making money instead of spending it.

ok so which you have had your little rant. Now i will have mine. the place do you reside? interior the significant element of London? Why no longer circulate someplace extra low value? I first examine your question as implying which you earn approximately £750 according to month internet. yet this may well be £9,000 a 365 days, or £11,000 a 365 days gross. you will possibly then be entitled to advantages of approximately £3,4 hundred a 365 days so my assumption might desire to be incorrect or there are different components in contact. yet a decrease earnings might propose extra suitable advantages and your internet does not exchange that plenty. So there is extra to this than on the commencing up seems. i think of you will possibly desire to direct your anger at despite it somewhat is interior the device that places you into this place. Blaming council tax isn't the respond as i'm optimistic you recognize.

Yes you do - if you look on the website of the local council concerned then you will see that there is a second home rate for homes not occupied 100% of the time and you will need to pay at that rate. But won't there be transport provided for your son?

Yes council tax will be payable. You could always ask the local authority to confirm.

    Yes.

If your name is on the tenancy agreement; you are responsible for paying Council Tax.
